Glenn’s Reel and Rod Repair


Glenn’s Reel & Rod Repair is an independent tackle shop. In addition to selling great fishing gear, they service everything they sell.

During college and a few year after I lived like a nomad.  Here for six months, there for a couple years.  I was never anywhere long.  My fishing rods made their home in rod tubes stashed in whatever late model vehicle I happened to be driving.  One spring I pulled out the St. Croix Avid rod I had bought with money from my high school graduation to discover the last guide had rotated so I couldn’t cast straight. It was under these circumstances that I made my first trip to Glenn’s Reel and Rod Repair.

The owner of Glenn’s isn’t named Glenn.  His name is Mark Hollingsworth, and his license plates say “Reel DR.” In 1971 Mark’s father bought the shop from Glenn, and it has been owned by his family ever since.  Bass Pro, Scheel’s, and Sportsman’s Warehouse have all moved to Des Moines, but they haven’t run this locally owned business out of town.  Walk in, and you’ll discover the charm that keeps customers coming back.


The front half of the shop is a retail area, where they carry a great selection of rods, reels, tackle, and trolling motors.  The unique part of this store is that they service everything sold.  The back area is where people from all over the world send their equipment to Des Moines to be repaired.  Manufacturers even send their customers to Glenn’s because they have out of stock parts.


Mark has always treated me well.  He fixed my St. Croix rod in a matter of minutes that spring day, and has serviced reels for me since then.  I’m making a point to buy as much of my tackle from him as possible in the future. He’s got a Shimano Curado reel that is my next purchase.
